Christopher MacKinnon, with the help of the Goose River Community Centre, will host the First Annual Brendon MacKinnon Memorial fishing derby which is open to the public this Sunday, April 15, the first day of the 2018 angling season.
The derby is open to all areas that allow fishing and to qualify for prizes you must bring your biggest speckled trout to the community centre between 9am to noon for the weigh-in.
Brendon MacKinnon fished all of his life and Christopher wanted to create a personal event to honour his dad’s memory.
Registration is $5 and youth 15 and under are free. Anglers can sign up at the Souris Legion or Johnny’s Auto Service Centre in St Peter’s. Registration will be accepted no later than April 14.
There will be trophies and prizes for first, second and third place. Children 15 years and under, who bring in one fish to get weighed, are welcome to put their names into a bucket to win one of three prizes. Only one entry per person will qualify.
Fishing is as much social as getting together to discuss catches and the ones that got away. With that in mind chowder and biscuits will be provided as well as tea, coffee and juice at the community centre.
Organizers hope to make the derby an annual affair.
